What we test and why it matters
Free chlorine keeps the water sanitized. pH controls swimmer comfort and how well chlorine works. Total alkalinity keeps pH from swinging. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) protects chlorine from the sun, but too much of it makes chlorine sluggish, so we watch both. Calcium hardness protects plaster, liners, and equipment. On saltwater pools we also check the salt level and the condition of the salt cell.
